Amando Rubio, General Manager of the Tyler Media Spanish Radio and Television passed away Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the age of 73 after a 2 1/2 month battle with Covid 19.
As a US citizen he grew up in Mexico and at 18 enlisted and proudly served in the US Army. He grew up cruising in his Chevelle SS listening to KOMA in California. He moved to Oklahoma when the General Motors plant opened in the late ‘70’s. Amando was a pioneer of Spanish Radio and Television in Oklahoma. He was the first to have a Spanish radio show in the late 80’s. In the 90’s he worked side by side with Ralph Tyler to grow the first full time Spanish radio and TV stations in Oklahoma, consisting of 4 radio and 5 TV stations in Tulsa and OKC. Amando was a pillar and agent of change in the Oklahoma Hispanic community. He served on numerous boards, dedicating his life to bettering the community and all of Oklahoma. Respectfully and affectionately known as “Don Armando”, his weekly TV show was a must watch for the Hispanic community. He didn’t know a stranger, helping anyone in need and a friend to all. He worked tirelessly to inform and help others. He was a true giant in his capacity to love, lead and help those in need.
Amando was a great person to know and work with and will be greatly missed by all at WPA Radio – KTLR / KKNG – Oklahoma City. Penance en Paz.
